Thoughts on the Artwork

By Artist Paul Grass

In this painting, I wanted to focus on the deeply personal and sacred moment when the woman with the issue of blood reaches out, pensively yet hopefully, to touch the Savior and be healed. Her gesture captures a beautiful combination of faith, uncertainty, and hope as she reaches toward Christ, believing in His power to heal.

Behind her, we see Peter holding back Mary, the mother of Jesus, and John the Beloved. On the far left, a woman looks back toward the viewer with a thoughtful, almost inviting gaze. Her expression seems to say, "Come and see. This is real." She invites us not simply to observe the miracle but to become witnesses of it ourselves.

I intentionally chose to leave the identities of the other disciples open to interpretation. With their backs turned toward the viewer, they become figures into whom we can place ourselves, people we know, or others we imagine might have been present. This allows each viewer to enter the painting in a personal and meaningful way.

Ultimately, my hope is that this painting invites us to reflect on our own relationship with Jesus Christ. Like the woman reaching toward Him, we each carry our own struggles, hopes, and need for healing. Through faith, we too can reach toward the Savior and experience His compassion, mercy, and love.
